0:25.7

Gifford on Turkey's attacks on the Kurds. Sean Collins looks at Trump a year on from his inauguration, and Andrew Doyle and Andy Shaw tell me about their

0:35.6

new comedy club which gives two fingers to censorship. Last week Turkey launched attacks on Kurds in Afrin and region in Syria.

0:55.0

Why? Well, it claimed that Kurdish terrorists were attacking Turkey.

0:59.0

This claim was not true.

1:01.0

Turkey is continuing to attack this part of Syria and perhaps not so surprisingly

1:06.0

there hasn't been a great deal of outcry from Western powers.

1:09.7

It seems that the US and the UK were perfectly happy with the Kurds when they were winning the fight against ISIS,

1:15.6

but won't defend them against these horrific attacks from Turkey. What is going on? Why have we abandoned the Kurds? Well, in order to try and get a handle on this, I spoke to Mesa Gifford, the well-known Brit who has been working and fighting with the Kurds for years. Here's what he had to say.

Afrin?

1:38.6

1:50.6

They have been fighting a lot against Al-Nusura and other sort of extremist groups within the

1:54.7

FSA as well. But largely the war has untouched this entire region and in fact its population is doubled because of that

2:02.3

because a lot of refugees from other part of the country have fled there.

2:06.0

Unfortunately, Turkey, which has always had an agenda in Syria, it's always been funding different groups to bring down the Assad government.

2:15.2

It's always trying to interfere to try and limit the rise of the YPG.

2:19.4

It's got eyes on Afroin now for two reasons. One, it wants to limit the rise of the

2:24.2

IPG. It wants to damage them and restrict their ability to sort of move arms and

2:30.0

money and to sort of trade with the rest of the country. But more than that, they actually want to connect the

2:35.5

region that they took last year with their own proxy forces around Al-Bab and Dralibis with the other FSA regions south of Afrin.
