Summary
Author of The Paleo Manifesto, pal of Steven Pinker, Harvard graduate, John Durant is also a really nice guy — much to my surprise and chagrin. We talk evolution, disgust, and the precise meaning of "virginity," among other things.

| 0:45.0 | Uh, tangentially speaking. This week's, uh, guest is John Durant. He is the author of the paleo manifesto, uh, which is a book that came out about six months ago. |
| 0:58.0 | I met him at the paleo conference in Austin last week, uh, quite an interesting conference. A lot of people talking about gluten and, uh, you know, how much meat we eat and how we move and how we exercise. |
| 1:14.0 | You know, all sorts of stuff about trying to look to our paleolithic past in order to understand what's going wrong in the present and how to design a better future, which of course is something I'm thinking a lot about for the book I'm working on at the moment, um, which is why I went down to this conference in Austin. |
| 1:34.0 | I give a presentation on paleolithic sexuality. You can imagine what that was like. Uh, what seemed to go over pretty well. It was, it was actually a very interesting conference. I expected a lot of the stuff about diet and exercise. Of course, everybody saw that coming, but it was interesting to see that the movement seems to be spreading beyond those two core concerns. |
| 2:00.0 | Um, and starting to look at things like sexuality, uh, like the way that we organize our ancestors, organize themselves, politically, economically, family, dynamic, things like that in, in pre-agricultural times. |
| 2:18.0 | And, um, I sat on two, uh, panels in addition to my presentation. One was a panel on cultivating, uh, figure what it was called something like cultivating, um, effective, happy men or something like that. |
| 2:35.0 | It's basically about, uh, the role of men in society and how that's changed, how societies attitude toward men has changed, particularly in the United States in the last 10, 15, 20 years. |
| 2:48.0 | Um, that was interesting. John was on that panel with me. And then I was on another panel about shamanism that was quite interesting. |
| 2:57.0 | Um, talking about the use of hallucinogens in, uh, pre-agricultural societies and trans states, whether they're arrived at by way of, uh, substances or dance or rhythm or, you know, drumming or, uh, fasting or whatever it is. |
| 3:15.0 | Basically, the, uh, the use of altered states of consciousness to affect healing, which is something I'll be writing about in this book as well. |
| 3:24.0 | Um, anyhow, it was an interesting conference. It was the Paleo FX conference. If you Google Paleo FX, you'll see a list of the speakers and stuff that happens. I guess it's an annual conference. So they'll be doing it again next year. |
| 3:39.0 | Uh, my understanding is that this was the third I think that they had done and, um, and every year, uh, it's getting bigger and bigger. So quite interesting. |
| 3:52.0 | Uh, a lot's changing around here at the podcast. Uh, I don't know if you can hear. I'm, I'm on a new mic. I'm in a new room that the acoustics might sound a little different from usual. |
