Cruise writer Dave Monk recently took one of Virgin Voyages’ first revenue sailings ever out of Portsmouth, England. Sailing a four-night “cruise to nowhere” aboard the line’s first ship, Scarlet Lady, he had plenty of time to explore and check out its various offerings.
In this interview, he offers his impressions of this trip vs. his first time on board last year, the dining options, whether the ship REALLY doesn’t have a buffet, and what amenities the ship has for passengers to enjoy.
Dave also discusses who the cruise line’s target audience is and goes over how to decide whether or not a Virgin Voyages cruise is right for you — because it’s quite different than any other cruise line in the world.

Well, it's not really brand new. It's been out for a while, but just hasn't sailed. So we'll get a review of Scarlet Lady from UK journalist Dave Monk, otherwise known as Shipmunk, on Twitter. Travel writer Dave Monk just returned from a four-night cruise aboard Virgin Voyage as a new ship, Scarlet Lady. Now they tried to launch this ship last year, so early 2020, but of course, COVID happened, |
0:54.4 | so it was docked or ported for months and months and months. Now it's back into service, and Dave's here to talk all about it. Hey, Dave. Hi, how you doing? Good, my friend. Now, when this ship debuted last year, so like March of 2020, it was in the UK for a hot minute. Did you get a chance to go on board? I did have a two-day visit to the ship when it arrived in Dover. |
0:55.0 | Gotcha. |
1:12.1 | Before we get to the ship itself, I want to take a step back and |
1:17.0 | give us some pre-cruised thoughts. What were you kind of formulating in your head? Because Virgin is definitely, |
1:22.0 | well, we'll just say game changer for the cruise industry. Yes, it's very different. Having had that |
1:27.4 | short experience in Dover, |
1:30.4 | unfortunately, the weather wasn't great. This ship will look great in the Caribbean, I'm sure, |
1:36.3 | but so far it's had to deal with mainly English weather. So the first impression when I got on |
1:42.6 | then back in February 2020 was I went to the top deck |
1:46.6 | and I thought that swimming pool looks a bit small for a ship with 2,800 people potentially. |
1:53.9 | And also it's quite, it's been designed largely by people that have not been involved in the cruise industry before, |
2:01.5 | which can be good and it can be bad in different aspects. |
2:05.7 | Inside, it's quite an inward-looking ship. |
2:08.3 | It's got lovely lounges and bars. |
2:11.4 | It's got a fantastic nightclub. |
