This story begins before Portia was even born. Her mother, Tiffany Bennett, had already had

four children by the time she was 23 years old, and she had come to the attention of human services

with several reports of neglect. This escalated in 1994, when Tiffany bought her youngest daughter

only a very young baby into emergency. She had lost consciousness and was rushed into intensive

care where the baby would later be pronounced dead.

The baby's cause of death would later be determined to be related to shaken baby syndrome.
