I was looking back upon my checkered life today

And I realized that

I think every movie that I saw in high school

I remember where I saw it I remember what I think every movie that I saw in high school, I remember where I saw it.

I remember what I was feeling that day.

I was remembering like how limited your world is in high school.

And I think looking back, movies must have been the way that I asserted the most independence,

intellectually and otherwise, you know, before I

was able to move out of the house. It's like so much of your life as a child is so regimented.

So much of it is outside of your control. You have to go to school. There are often very strict

borders on where you can travel. But I think, yeah, I realized that movies for me were the thing. It's like,

this was the self-directed, this was the self-guided field of inquiry that was all mine. And it felt

kind of like auditioning for adult life as well, because it was, oh, this is the day that I can

go downtown and see Grizzly Man, you know? Nobody else at the school knows who Werner Herzog is.
