Summary
Even beginning gardeners understand how critical healthy soil is to the life of their plants. But how do you know what's going on underneath your mulch? Without a soil test, you're just guessing, and you might even attempt to fix problems without knowing the root cause.
A soil test is a critical but overlooked component to understanding the home in which your plants live. In this episode, I'll go over the basics -- why you need to test your soil, when to test, how to test, and what to do after you receive your results.

| 0:00.0 | You're listening to the Beginners Garden podcast. I'm Jill McShehehe with Journey Withjil.net, |
| 0:06.0 | and my goal is to give beginning gardeners the tools they need to grow talking about testing your soil. |
| 0:32.8 | Now, if you're listening to this, when this episode goes live at the end of October, then you probably fall |
| 0:39.4 | into one or two camps. The first one is you have gardened in the past, this past year perhaps, |
| 0:46.4 | or maybe you've gardened for years, and you realize that you probably need to get a better |
| 0:51.3 | idea of what's going on in your soil. Or maybe you are like me |
| 0:56.5 | and you are planning your very first garden for next spring and you're getting a head start. |
| 1:03.9 | So either way, now is a great time for us to be talking about soil testing. |
| 1:10.2 | Soil testing is one of those subjects that I'm very |
| 1:13.3 | passionate about because I've seen the results of the things that I have done in my garden |
| 1:18.6 | over the years. I've seen the difference that the actions that I've taken as a result of my |
| 1:24.0 | soil tests have made. But it's also one of those things that is very overwhelming, |
| 1:29.8 | or at least it can be if you let yourself get too caught up in the details of everything. |
| 1:35.9 | Before we get too far into the content of today's podcast, I feel like I need to confess |
| 1:42.3 | something to you. Even though I have a college degree, I have never taken a chemistry course. |
| 1:49.2 | Not in college, not in high school, never. |
| 1:52.4 | Honestly, probably eighth grade earth science is the closest that I have gotten to any kind of education in soil science. |
| 1:59.5 | Honestly, it's a little overwhelming for me to think about |
| 2:02.1 | talking to you about testing your soil when I don't have a whole lot of formal education |
| 2:06.5 | in the subject. But I have done research and I have been able to give myself a working knowledge |
| 2:12.4 | as well as I can as a home gardener. And I think you're going to find that refreshing because I know one year |
| 2:19.2 | I bought a book. I was so excited about it. It was all about the soil and it was so over my head. |
