Diabetes affects the eyes significantly.

Not only does diabetes increase the risk for things like cataracts, diabetes affects the blood

vessels throughout your body.

And the retina in the back of the eye is one of the most highly vascular organs in

their body too next to the kidneys in the brain.

But we can look inside the eye and we can actively tell if you're bleeding.

And that can obviously cause deterioration and we can actively tell if you're bleeding and that can obviously

cause deterioration and vision, but it helps us communicate to whoever's managing diabetes if it's

being well controlled or not. Inside of the eye, there's a lens. And this lens you're born

with, it's clear, it's flexible. It's really thin when you're young. And as you get older,

this lens actually thickens. It actually grows one extra layer thick basically every year of your life. It's kind of like looking

at the rings on a tree if you ever look up images of it. As you continue to age, though, and you

start getting into your 60s, 70s, and above, the same lens starts to oxidize. Kind of the classic

example is I'll have an old man come in and I can probably guess

that he has cataracts because not only his age, but I look at his socks and he'll have one black

sock on and one dark blue sock on. He probably can't tell the difference because there's just

too clouding of a lens. I have some friends who are researchers in blue light at universities

and most of them do not recommend blue light glasses to most people,

not even their own family.

that are having a negative impact on their eyes without them knowing it?
