First Samuel, chapter 28 verses 6 and 7.

And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams or by

Urim or by prophets.

Then Saul said to his servants, seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.

And his servant said to him, behold, there is a medium at indoor.

These verses represent yet another call in the book of First Samuel to

patience before God and obedience to God and not trying to take things into your own hands.

The whole picture here is Saul meeting direction from God,

but the normal means of grace through which God provided that direction,

he wasn't getting the answer that he wanted when he wanted, so he goes outside of those,

and he seeks after a medium to go inquire of her to try to find out the word of

God. This is total defiance of God said not to do. And as foolish as this looks in Saul's life, the reality is you and I can do the same thing.

When we have a decision to make, when we are trying to discerning what to do in a certain situation,

there are means of grace that God has given us.

His word, that is our guide, that we go to and we think okay how does God's word

inform this decision that I need to make what I need to do in this situation.

We seek the leadership of God's spirit through his word through his church. We go to

Brothers and sisters in Christ who we know are walking with God and his word. We seek counsel from them. Obviously knowing that not everything

they say is infallible, it's perfect revelation from God by any means, nowhere close to the authority of God's word which is supreme over

and above everything else every council we could ever get from anyone else at the

same time when other brothers and sisters in Christ are walking in God's word,
