So let's talk about where the character came from in his initial design. So according to an Awata asked column about spirit tracks, yes spirit tracks, that game came out near to the 25th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda, so I think they were talking a lot about the origins of the series in general.

This is when the Legend of Zelda has origins as a a project called Adventure Mario that was the project

cod name and Gannon was first known as Hakai and it was based on a character from which incredibly

influential Chinese novel well there's only one guess and that guess is journey to the west because all things

were just stealing rampantly from that incredibly popular Chinese story.

translation of that. So technically the character that inspired Gannon, his full name is Chohakai in the Japanese translation. The original name is Zu Bagee and I believe in Dragon Ball that is where

Ulong comes from so they turn the pig character into Ulong and in this case

they turn the pig character into Gannon. So let's go back to

Mario, let's go back to our Bowser podcast. The character of Bowser was patterned after Journey to the West's Ox King king character specifically how he looked in a

1960s anime version of that story and coincidentally Supermired brothers and

Legend of Zelda were entering development as the Dragon Ball manga was in its first few years.

I don't know if there's a coincidence, but I feel like there's at least a lot of lateral thinking
