Okay. We see it. We see shapes and the reflections all around us, slithering beneath our feet. This is a place of light, and these shapes seem to glow, emitting no shadow but instead

this sulfuric smell that lingers in the air.

They are dainty and delicate, precise, grim and keen as they slither their way through grass,

under velvet, about glassy, glassy bark, and around stunts, and we realize that they are us.

They are our guilt and our love, our hopes, our dreads, and they are being extinguished, slithering, crying out to exist no more,

to be lost amongst the light and the leaves.

When the veneer told us that these serpents were us, that they were taking on bits of us,

the porcelain doll thought maybe that that could help somehow. Maybe if they have pieces of us within, maybe they can

find a way out that we can't. Maybe they can reach the edge of the forest in a way that we cannot.

And maybe if they escape, then we escape with them.

And the porcelain doll, curious still when this happened, hopeful still, meddled.

She tried to follow them and guide them and put more of herself into them.

She told them her secrets and her dreams and the way home that she remembered.

And they did have the ability to go places that we did not, they can even slip in and out of not just the forest, but reality itself.
