Summary

"I’m not the type of athlete who likes to go to the track, come home, and watch Netflix or play video games until the next run, and then rinse and repeat. I will go crazy trying to do that. A lot of people enjoy that and think they have to do that in order to get the success that they are working toward — that they have to give up every other part of their life that isn’t running related. And I’ve always pushed back on that. I don’t think it’s this either/or situation. I think there’s an 'and.' You just have to figure out the right 'and' blend."

Colleen Quigley is affectionately known as "Steeple Squigs" — a play on her last name, combined with what has always been her greatest passion: competing in the steeplechase. The Florida State University alum rose to fame within the professional track and field ranks by becoming a Nike-sponsored Olympian who trained with the Bowerman Track Club. At the end of 2020, Colleen announced her departure from both Nike and BTC, and in May 2021, she signed with new sponsor lululemon. Now, she's continuing to do things her way, which means slightly less conventional training methods and goals for a track athlete: She's going multisport! Colleen has spent the past several months embracing the swim-bike-run life, and this weekend, she'll compete in her first triathlon in hopes of earning her pro card. So why triathlon? And is she done on the track? All that and more in this conversation.

Welcome to The Alley on the Run Show. I'm your host Allie Feller and this is Run Your Way.

Last year I introduced the Beyond the Run series where I talked with professional athletes,

0:26.1

industry professionals and everyday runners about running and mental wellness and their takes on

0:31.9

the connection between the two. This year we're expanding on that with a bit of a twist.

0:38.0

This series is called Run Your Way. If I've learned anything from more than 600 episodes of The Alley

0:44.8

on the Run Show, which I think that I have, it's that yes, there are best practices, there's great

0:50.0

advice going around, but ultimately the best way to run is your way. However that looks.

0:58.3

This series will explore what it means to run your way and is there a more perfect fit for this

1:03.8

series than professional steeple chaser turns triathlete, Colleen Quigley? Yeah. The past few

1:10.4

years have been filled with change for Colleen. She left her longtime training group and sponsor,

1:16.0

Barriman Track Club and Nike, and signed with Lulu Lemon. She's dealt with injury and she's come

1:22.5

back repeatedly. And most importantly, she's kept doing it her way. Now if you follow her on

1:30.4

Instagram, which 236,000 of you do, you've seen Colleen going all in lately not just on running,

1:38.0

but on the multi-sport life. Yeah, she's a triathlete now. I was curious about why though.

1:44.4

What appealed to her about swimming, biking, and running? And how has multi-sport training

1:48.8

affected her relationship with just running? Now let's be honest, we know Colleen Quigley is a

1:55.3

woman with a plan. So what is that plan? What's the goal? I wanted to know. So I brought her on the show

2:02.6

and I asked. In this conversation, Colleen talks about why triathlon, she shares what her goals are

2:08.8

with all this training and she shares the answer to the question everyone's been asking, which is,

2:14.3

so are you done on the track? It's time to find out. Please join me in welcoming Colleen Quigley
