Summary

(From the 8/7/20 archives) Media missteps and absence of good journalism

Why responsible journalism, something the public wants most, is so hard to find in the chaotic campaign news environment. Also, Glenn Greenwald’s take on bad journalism. And, an eye-opening look at what was in the news exactly 4 years ago this week during campaign 2016.

Hi everybody, Cheryl Ackison here. Welcome to another edition of the Cheryl Ackison

0:14.0

podcast on JustTheNews.com. A reminder to pre-order my new book, Slanted, how the news media

0:22.0

taught us to love censorship and hate journalism. Boy, every day that book rose more relevant,

0:28.0

digging into the death of the news as we knew it and who and what are behind today's disturbing

0:33.8

trends that slanted. Today we're discussing a recent instance of media mile practice with a story

0:40.0

about President Trump supposedly disparaging fallen U.S. troops that turned out to be something

0:46.2

quite entirely different. You seem to appreciate the deep dive analyses that I give into

1:02.0

journalism techniques and missteps. It's so important for information consumers to understand

convoluted, but I will do my best to break it down and summarize it fairly succinctly.

1:40.1

Among what was said to be the biggest blockbuster claims in the Atlantic article,

1:45.5

the headline in the first couple of graphs, was reporting, now I'm summarizing, that on a trip to

1:51.2

France a couple of years ago, President Trump supposedly faked a weather excuse to get out of a

1:57.2

planned helicopter trip to a nearby cemetery where fallen U.S. soldiers were buried. Also a ledge

2:03.6

that he referred to the fallen U.S. soldiers as losers and suckers.

2:09.4

Problem number one came when various media outlets claimed to have confirmed the story,

2:14.7

but that's completely wrong terminology, a misuse of terminology, because they really haven't

2:21.1

confirmed anything. All they confirmed, maybe you could say, was that sources who wished to remain
