Welcome back to Journey Through Time and the second of our three special holiday episodes on Charles Dickens and his

great book, A Christmas Carol. I'm David O'Dushogger. And I'm Sarah Churchill. And last time we told

the story of how Christmas was almost dying in England in 1843. There was no public holiday.

The old traditions were being forgotten. And then Dickens, who at this point was already deeply in debt,

and at, as we said, a crisis point, he visited a school in Holburn, the Field Lane Ragged School,

and was so shaken by what he saw, the condition of the children there, that he wrote a Christmas carol in just six weeks and bet everything on it.

And created one of the greatest characters in English literature, Ebenezer Scrooge,

to embody not just this kind of individual, but to embody Victorian societies, materialism,

its cruelty towards the poor, its disregard for children. And Scrooge does all of that by going

through this journey led by the hand with three ghosts who come to haunt him. So when we left off, Scrooge had just

seen the Cratchett family, heard Tiny Tim's famous blessing, God bless us everyone. This is the family

of Bob Cratchett, who is his long-suffering, overworked, underpaid clerk. Yeah. And then Scrooge has

heard his own cruel words thrown back at him, which is that if Tiny Tim is going to die,
