House Speaker Mike Johnson decided not to call for a vote on a short-term government

funding bill today hours before it was set to be brought to the floor.

Johnson appeared to lack the votes needed to pass the

bill with some Republicans citing with Democrats who say they don't support it.

Here's CNN's Lauren Fox.

Johnson was dealing with the fact that he had at least eight members who had

publicly said that they were planning to vote against his short-term bill

because they just don't believe in continuing government funding. They wanted to pass these

individual spending bills. That was never going to happen. Congress is

staring down a September 30th deadline to keep the government funded until March

25th. The Republican's six-month

spending bill included something dubbed the Save Act. The proposal would

require people to present proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in

federal elections, even though it's already illegal for

non-citizens to cast ballots in federal elections.

Johnson is under pressure from former President Donald Trump, who says if election

security isn't tied to the spending bill, Republicans

shouldn't pass it. An Israeli airstrike on a shelter for displaced Palestinians

killed more than a dozen people in Central Gaza today.
