Hi there, from CNN, I'm Joe Beck with the five things you need to know for

Wednesday August 7th. Vice President Carmelah Harris has made her first appearance

alongside her new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Wals.

To his fellow veterans, he is Sergeant Major Wall, to his former high school students, he was Mr. Wall. And to his former high school

football players he was coach.

Wals beat a lot of possible candidates for the position, and now a lot of people are asking, why him?

Sources familiar with the process say Wals aced his interview and, quote, everyone loved him, but he was up front about his vulnerabilities like the fact

he's not from a swing state he's not a household name and he's not the best debater but

Wals also apparently made it clear that he's a team player. He said he'd perform the role of

VP however Harris wanted him to and that he had no ambition to run for president himself

one day. Harris's team also see walls as someone who could attract the voters that Harris may not connect with,

and who Democrats have lost to former President Donald Trump.

One source said, quote, He hunts, he fishes. You want to have a beer with him.

Trump's campaign is already trying to define Wals as someone who will move the Democratic

ticket to the left, with one advisor saying Harris found a quote,

60 year old white guy who has the same crazy ideas she does.
