Hello from CNN I'm Joe Beck with the five things you need to know for Wednesday

September 20th. There's no doubt in my mind we're headed for a shutdown I'm

looking at it is that shutdown gonna be 10 days or is that shutdown going to be 10 weeks?

That was Republican Representative Tony Gonzalez, giving his bleak outlook on whether Congress

can pass a budget by the end of the month to avoid a government shutdown.

The clock is ticking and another day of infighting between House Republicans yesterday has many

lawmakers worried. If the government is shut down it could lead to furloughs for federal workers who provide basic services,

troops could go unpaid, and if it lasts a long time, it could cause severe damage to an economy that can't afford any more knocks.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has got a proposal for a short-term spending bill on the table,

but to come up with it he had to meet the demands of some conservative hardliners, which has not gone

down well with other members of the party.

He's expected to put the bill to a vote tomorrow, and he's working with a slim majority,

so he needs most House Republicans on board to get it passed.

It's decision day for the Fed and this afternoon we'll find out what's happening with interest rates.

The central bank is widely expected to keep them on hold as it waits for more data to understand how

previous rate hikes are affecting the US economy. The Fed raised its rates till a 22-year high this summer, as it continued its fight against inflation.

And despite this month's anticipated pause, Fed Chair Jerome Powell is expected to stress that

prices are still growing fast, leaving the door open for another rate increase in November.

As the UN General Assembly enters day two, President Joe Biden will meet with Israel's

Prime Minister on the sidelines today.

It's the first time Biden has sat down with Benjamin Netanyahu since he came back to power,

and since he introduced highly controversial plans to take power away from the country's judicial system.
