Police are racing to find the gunman who shot and killed United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. Every indication is that this was a premeditated, pre-planned, targeted attack.

Police say the suspect was lying in wait outside a hotel in Midtown yesterday morning,

when Thompson arrived before 7am for the company's annual investor conference.

CNN's Shimon Procupes describes video footage that captured the shooting.

The gunman comes from behind and raises his handgun within feet of Thompson.

The assassin opens fire, shooting Thompson in the back. Thompson stumbles and looks back at his killer as the gunman walks towards him.

Police say the gun malfunctions, but the shooter clears the jam and continues to fire.

Police say the suspect then ran away and got on an e-bike.

He was last seen entering Central Park, and investigators have been searching the area, but they

haven't found the bike or the gun, and the shooter is still on the loose.

ABC News reports, citing police sources, that the words deny, defend and depose were found

on shell casings discovered at the scene. A motive for the shooting is unclear, but a source

with knowledge of the investigation says United Healthcare's parent company was aware of

concerning threats against its high-level executives.
