Hello from CNN, I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Friday August 16th.

Vice President Carmelah Harris is expected to unveil her broad economic plan today.

She's given a few hints on what it might look like, including at a rally yesterday with President

Joe Biden, saying she may continue his battle against drug prices.

For years, big pharma has often inflated the price of life-saving medications.

Often charging many times what it would cost to make just to increase their profits.

Former President Donald Trump has yet to release a detailed economic plan, but he has held two

speeches this week centered on the economy, including

this one yesterday.

Harris has just declared that tackling inflation will be a day one priority, but day one

really for Kamala was three and a half years ago where

has she been and why hasn't she done it?

Trump and Harris do agree on some issues like ending federal taxes on tips but they differ

on other policies including the 3.4 trillion dollar tax cuts that expire next year.

Trump wants to extend them while Harris has pledged not to raise taxes

on anyone making less than $400,000 a year. It's day two of negotiations to try to get a ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas.

The talk started in Qatar yesterday, and CNN's Jeremy Diamond says even the fact that they're continuing today is a good sign.

And while we know that Hamas hasn't been in the room

as these negotiations have been ongoing,

we are being told that the Egyptian and cuttery mediators have been updating Hamas, are engaging with Hamas, and so that is also a positive indication.

Now, one other key indication here is that the cuttary prime minister who has been intimately

involved in these negotiations was in the room on Thursday.
