this is unacceptable.

That was the mayor of Eagle Pass, Texas, Orlando Salinas Jr.

He says that around 5,000 people have crossed the border in the last few days,

and earlier this week he declared a state of emergency.

The Department of Defense says it's sending 800 new active service members to the

U.S. border to help with the increase in migrant crossings, which will add to the 2,500 National Guard

members already there.

Officials haven't given a reason for the recent rise, but some migrants told CNN they've grown

desperate after waiting months for their formal applications to be processed.

CNN's Ed Lavandera spoke to people after they risked a dangerous crossing

to the Rio Grande to get into Eagle Pass. They wanted to apologize for crossing illegally into the US and that they're begging and asking for mercy

to understand that they're coming from a country where they're persecuted, they feel like if they were to be returned home, they would be killed.

Well, lawmakers have left Congress for the weekend, with no deal to avoid a government shutdown on the table.

Last night, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's short-term funding bill was put on ice,

as some members of his party moved to block it from even being voted on.
