But apparently it was not common for Americans to do what they would, you would consider a vacation,

until the mid-1800s.

Well, they say how'd them then, okay.

Rich people could do it, but it's about it, I'm sure.

Even then, it was still a luxury, didn't become a middle-class norm until the early, early 20th century.

Yeah.

Now, the Greeks and the Romans, the ancient ones, they took vacations.

They mostly went to the coast, European ornithocrats.

And then there's a guy named Thomas Cook in the mid-1800s.

Cook took wealthy Britons on tours of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the U.S., often packaging together transportation, lodging food,

effectively creating the modern travel agent.

He also pioneered travel writing with the traveler's handbook, offering tourist tips for visiting various countries.

Atlantic City was one of the first major vacation destinations in the U.S.
