Summary

Super-fast data transfer, ultra low latency, and high bandwidth don't seem to justify the astronomical cost of implementing 5G, especially when consumers aren't willing to pay for it! Single use cases, exciting as they may be, don't justify the means. But could 5G as an enabler of other tech be the real value we're seeking?

If you joined us last time, you'll already know that 5G has got more than its fair share of detractors.

0:09.0

1G came with some problems that were fixed by 2G, 2G had some problems that were fixed by 3G, 3G had some problems that were fixed by 4G.

0:16.0

What's 5G fixing? It's just making it faster.

0:20.0

Yes, that super fast data transfer, ultra low latency and high bandwidth don't seem to justify

0:26.6

the astronomical cost of implementing 5G, especially when consumers are already pretty happy with

0:33.9

what they've got with 4G.

0:36.2

We can talk about more bandwidth than lower latency all we want.

0:39.3

What does that mean?

0:40.3

Why does it make a difference?

0:42.3

If I can download a movie in two seconds as opposed to two minutes, who cares?

0:47.3

That's not a significant change in the structure of the world.

0:55.3

Today in part two of our 5G extravaganza, we'll be connecting the dots to find out what

1:00.7

happens when test beds and trials go big, how 5G might redefine computing as we know it,

1:06.7

and perhaps more importantly, why organizations should care about all of this stuff in the first place.

1:13.6

The thing that 5G is going to enable that is significantly different from everything that's gone before

1:20.6

and is fundamentally going to change the nature of the relationship between humans and computers going

1:27.4

forward. All that and much, much more. I'm Michael By humans and computers going forward.

1:28.2

All that and much, much more.

1:30.5

I'm Michael Bird, and this is Technology Untangled.

1:55.9

Thank you. So last episode we talked about some of the misconceptions about 5G, and you might want to go back and listen if you haven't done so already.

2:01.6

Some of this might not make much sense to you. Anyway, we came to a bit of a conclusion.

2:06.1

On its own, a single use case doesn't really cut the mustard.
