Hello everyone and welcome back to Ben Kumba Radio so as you can tell you are here with me Tom I'm the usual co-host but Ben has given me the reins today and I'm really excited so I have the honour of welcoming Dr. Gabrielle Fondero. She's from the US. I'm sure we'll expand a little bit more about this. But as listeners will know, I'm sure, a couple weeks ago Ben and I had a talk that it devolved into a discussion about healthism and various different topics around that and Dr Fondero is really knowledgeable about this will give like her social media handles and stuff later on so you can go and check out our work but I'm not I'm not blub on too long so Gabrielle welcome to the show. Thank you thank you for having me.

Absolutely so I am on social media as Vitamin PhD

probably folks are familiar with me for most of my work around gut health and the gut

microbiome. So that was the area of my PhD research. I looked at the potential protective effects of probiotic supplementation during high fat feeding.

That was back in 2014 before, that's when I finish, that's sort of before

gut health became the, the trend that it is now.

So that was sort of serendipitous that it led into my current place in the industry.

Before that, I did my bachelor's in exercise sport and health ed.

So I had originally intended to own a gym

and sort of work in that arena.

And as I was going through my bachelor's I really fell in love with anatomy and physiology and then subsequently fell in love with teaching.

So I was tutoring my classmates all the time.

And I just thought it was so fulfilling

to connect with folks in that way to help them feel more capable

in pursuing their coursework. And so I well if this is something I'm going to do for free for hours every week you know this is something I should do for a career and so I decided that I wanted to pursue a PhD so I could be a college professor. So I went on to an internship in

skeletal muscle fiz and biochem and then that's where I eventually did my PhD as well. And I ended up going to a teaching

focus institution to teach exercise science, so primarily sport nutrition and anatomy and

phys did quite a lot of advising as well. We were sort of a non-traditional setup and

I really fell in love with that process also because it was a way for me to work one on one with students to help them navigate their careers.
