John Philbin would go on to serve as perhaps the most indelible prototype of a surfer,

for me anyways, in my most impressionable years.

It was through his role as Turtle in the 1987 film North Shore

that I would watch on repeat in my adolescence, that I learned surf lingo, I learned how to style

your hair into the shape of a wave, where to sit in the lineup, and more importantly, where not

to sit when the wave breaks here.
