Summary

We spend our lives climbing mountains—chasing the perfect relationship, the higher salary, or the dream home—convinced that the view from the top will finally make us feel complete. But all too often, we arrive at the summit only to find that the feeling of emptiness has followed us up the trail. Welcome to the Happiness Podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. There's a lot of wise, sagacious books out there.

0:09.0

The Bible, the Quran, the Baba-Gita, the Buddha Sutras. But do you know one of the most

0:15.6

informative, insightful, in many ways, sagacious, periodicals, texts of all time, that comes out once a month?

0:25.3

People magazine. If you're utterly shocked and maybe perhaps disgusted by what I just said,

0:32.5

give me a few minutes to explain my point. Perhaps 99% of people on planet Earth believe in the following algorithm.

0:40.3

If, then. If I get my promotion, then I'll be happy. If I find my life partner, then I'll be whole.

0:49.3

If I win the lottery, then I'll have everything I ever wanted. We could call this the destination

0:56.4

addiction. If this happens, then all will be well. If I can heal from this ailment, then my body will

1:04.9

feel better and all will be well. So again, before you go away, how does people magazine fit into this and what does it have to teach us?

1:14.2

The thing I like about People Magazine, one, I could be wrong, but I do think it's a fairly honest

1:19.3

periodical.

1:20.9

When it's detailing the lives of the rich or the famous, it's really not sensationalizing anything.

1:27.1

It's just describing what's happening in

1:29.2

these people's lives. And we as humans are very curious. We want to know. My favorite rock star,

1:35.8

my favorite tennis player, what's happening with them right now? So what possible, sagacious

1:41.1

information could people magazine have for me or any of us. That seems ridiculous.

1:47.0

But if we go back to the concept of destination addiction, the if-then equation, then here's what

1:53.3

People Magazine has to teach us. Most people, not all people, aspire to do well in life. I think

1:59.8

that's a fairly common desire. When lottery tickets

2:03.2

reach a point where there are astronomical amounts of winning, we kind of go crazy. The other day,

2:09.5

I heard a very interesting story. There was a man who went on an internet date, and he thought

2:15.0

she was great, but after she left, she wasn't very impressed
