Summary

"Once we realized it was real… I mean, it's not like that happens every week. It was really freaking cool!"

Emily Oster was first on the Ali on the Run Show last February. At the time, the economist, Brown University professor, and best-selling author talked about how running is the one place in her life where she lets go of all the data and just runs.

Fast-forward a few months, and Emily has a running coach (Kaitlin Goodman!), a training plan, a pair of super shoes, and finisher's medals from a 1:41 half marathon and 42:01 10K. Safe to say, Emily's relationship with running has evolved! In this conversation, recorded in front of a live audience at the Tracksmith Trackhouse in Boston, Emily — who is the author of Expecting BetterCribsheet, and The Family Firm — talks about that evolution, and about whether more racing is in her future. Plus, what it was like being honored as one of TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2022, including how she found out about the honor, what it was like being on the red carpet next to Zendaya, and whether her kids are impressed by her achievements.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Allie on the Run Show. I am your host Allie Feller and

0:10.0

today I am bringing you a live episode. This conversation was recorded in front of a live

0:16.1

audience at the Tracksmith Trackhouse. Last Friday in Boston we had so much fun. Big thank

0:22.1

you to everyone who came. What a great crowd. They were engaged and fun and wonderful and

0:29.2

so many of you stayed afterward for hugs and to chat. I hope you know that events like

0:34.4

that really do give me life and they're always exactly what I need. Every live show is a

0:40.2

little bit different and this one was really really special. So that's what you will be hearing

0:44.8

today whether you are in the audience and you are reliving all the fun or you're hearing

0:48.8

it for the first time. My guess for this event is Emily Osser. Emily is, well if you're

0:54.6

a parent or caregiver, you probably know Emily. She just might be your Bible. I know that

1:00.8

when I was pregnant I read her first book expecting better. I then read her second book,

1:06.7

Crib Sheet and soon I'll be reading the Family Firm as my daughter is getting a bit older.

1:11.6

So Emily is a best-selling author. She is an economist. All of her parenting stuff, you

1:17.5

know, she doesn't always call it advice but really what it is is she's taking data that

1:23.1

we have and making sense of it because she wants parents to be more relaxed and lead more

1:28.7

relaxed lives as they pertain to parenting. So it was great to get to do this event with

1:34.4

her and we had a lot of fun. We talked about the fact that the last time she was on the

1:39.2

alley on the run show back in February, she was like I love running on a lifelong runner

1:43.4

but my running is where I let go of the data and I have no desire to ever run a race. Fast

1:49.2

forward to now. And not only did she run a half marathon a few weeks ago, she has a coach,

1:55.4

she is all in on the running related data and the splits and the numbers and she absolutely

2:00.9

smashed the Boston 10K for women on Saturday morning. She ran a 42 minute 10K. This woman
