In the last episode, we looked at how the commanding general of the Union Army, Irvin McDowell,

failed to maintain the initiative after the Federal Army seized Matthews Hill, and as a

result, the Confederates were given time to put together a defensive line on Henry Hill.

You guys can remember from the last show how after the Union soldiers seized Matthews Hill,

there were then a couple of unsanctioned, unsupported advances by several federal regiments.

They were unsanctioned, and the McDowell didn't order them, instead they were undertaken

by a couple of officers on their own initiative.

But those piecemeal attacks were driven off by the Confederates.

Well, the next federal attack was another of those unsupported, unsanctioned assaults

that McDowell hadn't ordered, and this attack crashed into the right flank of the newly formed

Y'all will recall how Tyler's Federal Division had been ordered to make a demonstration at

the Stone Bridge on the morning of the battle, but that later on, as the fighting on Matthews

to come to Sherman, had crossed Bull Run at a previously unknown fort above the bridge.

Well, Sherman headed for Matthews Hill, but then when Tyler followed, crossing Bull Run

with a Rasmus Kees brigade, Tyler had Kees moved toward Henry Hill.

Coming in from the northeast, Kees was maneuvering toward the vulnerable Confederate right flank
