Today's guest was Surfer Magazine's editor from 1990 to 1998, the precise years that I first

0:24.9

discovered surfing and first subscribed to Surfer Magazine as well. And it would not be wrong to

0:31.1

state that my initial view of the entire surf world was a direct reflection of Steve Hawke's

0:37.3

own interpretation of it. Born in

0:40.8

Pensacola, Florida in 1955, but raised in San Diego, Hawk began surfing and skating in his early

0:47.1

teens. And incidentally, he actually gave his younger brother, Tony, his first skateboard. Tony would go on to become, of course,

0:56.4

the most famous skateboarder of all time. And we don't actually discuss Tony Hawk here today.

don't discuss, in addition to Tony Hawk, that are related to Steve's career. They're certainly

1:40.0

worth noting, and that is his environmental activism and his philanthropy work.

1:45.2

He worked for the Sierra Club as the executive editor for their magazine and he got into that

1:51.0

because of his environmental activism.

1:53.6

And then he also ran Tony Hawk's Foundation, which focuses on investing in low-income communities.

1:59.5

So again, part of his career, important parts,

2:02.0

and certainly worth noting, even though we don't get into it today. There's a lot to unpack

2:06.3

here actually today, and we've actually already been scheduling a second podcast in the future

2:11.7

with Steve. So you can look forward to that too. Okay, but before we get into it, I do owe a
