If you're not watching 100-foot wave on HBO, you should be. Whether you're interested in surfing or not, I've found it to be the most compelling surf documentary in some time.

The initial concept for the series centers around surfer Garrett McNamara and his quest

to surf a 100-foot wave at a spot that breaks right up against a cliff at the small

fishing town of Nazare, Portugal.

Season 1 premiered in July 2021, season 3 debuted two weeks ago on May 1st,

2025. You can catch new episodes on HBO on Thursdays. Through the three seasons, we have seen

the town of Nazaree transform. We've seen other surfers attempt to follow in Garrett's footsteps.

Some have risen to the occasion.

Others have been conquered by the sea.

Everyone gets injured.

One surfer unfortunately died at this location during the filming.

That's documented in season three.

We've also seen the McNamara family grow and we've seen Garrett in his mid-50s

not only get the recognition, the surfing world never quite fully gave him, but superseded

to the point where he's now one of the most recognizable surfers on the planet, probably

right alongside Laird Hamilton, Bethany Hamilton, and Kelly Slater.

Garrett's wife, Nicole, is an equally central figure in this series, and so she will be joining

us in today's show, as will the series producer Joe Lewis, who funded the show from its inception

with director Chris Smith, who had just come off directing the wildly

successful Netflix series, Tiger King. So Joe Lewis's credits also include Amazon Prime's

massive hits, Fleabag, which was one of my favorite shows of all time, and Transparent,
