Summary

At age nine, Marc was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome due to incessant vocal and motor tics that interfered with every aspect of his life. Every medical professional concluded that his condition was uncontrollable and incurable, but Marc overcame Tourette’s in 2013, drawing from innovations from courses in emotional intelligence (NXIVM), using only mind over body, and sheer will. (Adapted from Marc’s website.) Marc is a passionate advocate for NXIVM’s founder, Keith Raniere, arguing that Keith didn’t get a fair trial and that his actions have been misrepresented in the media.

Intro music “Brightside of the Sun,” by Basin and Range. “Only a Fool Would Say That” by Steely Dan; Outro: “Homens,” by Manu Chao.

Greetings one and all. Welcome to another episode of tangentially speaking.

0:36.0

Today's guest is Mark Elliott. Mark is best known to the extent that you know him. You might know him as a guy who was involved in Nixim, which is either a multi-level marketing company or a human optimization organization or a sex cult.

0:59.0

Depending upon what information you've heard, there was a multi-part two-season Netflix documentary about this organization called the Vow.

1:14.0

I first heard about this a while ago, a couple years ago maybe, when the leader of this organization, again, he was arrested.

1:28.0

I think I read about it in the New York Times or some other mainstream news organization.

1:35.0

And from the very beginning, it smelled fishy to me. Because most of the crimes, air quote, crimes, that he was accused of, this is before the trial before he was convicted of air quote, crimes.

1:55.0

They were things that are creepy and make people uncomfortable, but they were not crimes.

2:07.0

The gist of it is that apparently he had sexual relationships with several of the women who were involved in this organization.

2:18.0

And some of the women either independently or at his direction, that's not clear, but in any case several of the women formed this kind of like inner core group of you know Keith's girls and they had different rituals involved with being in this little harem, one of which was branding themselves.

2:45.0

And so this whole thing kind of got out and the law got involved and decided they were going to take him down and take the whole organization apart and they did and they accused him of sex trafficking and child pornography and racketeering.

3:09.0

I'm not really sure what racketeering is actually, but in any case, he was tried and convicted and now he's in prison probably for the rest of his life.

3:20.0

Now the thing is when I was a kid, there was this very popular saying sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.

3:31.0

This is what you said, this is what parents told their kids, this is what you said when somebody called you a name on the playground, you would just be a sassy little fucker and say sticks and stones may break my bones, my name will never hurt me.

3:44.0

And that was your defense, right? I don't know if kids still say that anymore because now we live in a time where words are considered violence.

3:55.0

And if someone says something that makes you uncomfortable, you not being you, of course, because if you listen to this podcast, you're not one of those people because I say things that make you uncomfortable all the time.

4:08.0

And thank you for sticking it out and saying, all right, I wish he hadn't said that, but you know, Chris is all right. So I'm still going to listen. I appreciate that.

4:19.0

Because that's the spirit of what I'm trying to talk about here. Keith Reiner, he did things that make me uncomfortable, apparently, like apparently he had a 15 year old girl sending him naked photos of herself.
