| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. There's a lot of things that we want in life. |
| 0:13.4 | We may want money so that when any unforeseen crisis arise, we have the money to cover it, |
| 0:19.9 | and even extra money to really enjoy life. |
| 0:23.1 | We may want health, because when we're healthy and our bodies are doing well, then we can |
| 0:28.5 | really enjoy life, and when we get older, and we have the time and perhaps even the money |
| 0:33.4 | to really enjoy life, health is critical, because if we're not healthy, all that work we put |
| 0:40.3 | into to retire and live happily ever after goes away. We may want love, love of another person, |
| 0:49.8 | love of our children that love us and we love them, because with this love, we find meaning and |
| 0:56.5 | purpose in life. But if we take a moment and really think about these things that we want, |
| 1:02.4 | what's at the core of all of them? I believe it's security. But we can approach this security |
| 1:10.1 | from two vantage points. At one end of the spectrum, |
| 1:14.3 | our lives may be very hard right now. We don't have enough money to pay rent. And it scares us. |
| 1:21.9 | It frightens us. And we pray and we wish for someday when we don't have to struggle like this anymore |
| 1:29.5 | because it's exhausting. But at the other end of the spectrum, we may have everything that we |
| 1:37.3 | think we want, but know that life changes, and very quickly it can suddenly change. I know several people recently |
| 1:49.1 | in the last few months who have worked really hard as a couple, saved, and now they reach |
| 1:56.5 | the point of retirement, and they're so looking forward to spending the golden years with their partner. |
| 2:04.3 | And now they're alone because her partner didn't make it. |
| 2:09.9 | It is a common human tendency to seek security in things outside of our control, |
| 2:21.3 | like a stable job, financial wealth, perfect health, or the approval of others. And while these things are nice to have, |
| 2:29.3 | they are inherently impermanent and an unreliable source of true security. Relying on them is like |
| 2:38.2 | building a house on shifting sand. Sooner or later, something is not going to work anymore. |
