Hey everybody, I got a fun one today, you know, for a change.

David Letterman is my guest, David Letterman, and you will enjoy it.

So there, so much bleak stuff happening, and I thought I'd give you a bit of a respite from the bleak stuff.

But first, some bleak stuff.

The day after the tragic shootings in Boulder, just a few days after the tragic shootings in Atlanta,

there was a judiciary committee hearing, my old committee,

on guns.

These hearings, of course, are scheduled well in advance.

Nevertheless, here's Ted Cruz at that hearing.

Every time there's a shooting, we play this ridiculous theater where this committee gets together

and proposes a bunch of laws that would do nothing to stop these murders.

Again, Cruz knows that this hearing was planned well before Atlanta and Boulder.

And here's the thing. I was in the Senate in 2017 on the judiciary,

and I don't recall having 346 of these hearings

because that's how many mass shootings we had

in that year in the United States.

Now he goes on.

What happens in this committee after every mass shooting is Democrats propose taking away

guns from law-abiding citizens because that's their political objective. But what they propose,

not only does it not reduce crime, it makes it worse. Okay, a couple things.

The only guns we keep talking about taking away are the kind of assault weapons that the

killer in Boulder used, a semi-automatic assault weapon.
