0:00.0 | Welcome to the Happiness Podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. As we journey through life, most of us, |
0:14.5 | maybe not all, but most of us go through times where other people hurt us. And sadly, |
0:20.6 | the people that hurt us are often the |
0:22.9 | ones that are supposed to be protecting us. And for most of us, there's little we can do to prevent |
0:28.6 | this hurt. For example, when we're a child and our father, when he drinks, beats us, hurts us, |
0:36.8 | does things that cause us pain. As a child, there's very |
0:40.8 | little we can do to stop this. Yes, other people can perhaps protect us like our other parent |
0:46.0 | or teachers or society, but for the most part, we ourselves when we're younger have very |
0:53.4 | little we can do to protect ourselves. |
0:55.9 | And usually abuse like this doesn't go on for the rest of our lives. There's a point where we're free of it. |

1:09.8 | But at some point, we meet a crossroads. We consciously or unconsciously |
1:15.4 | decide how we're going to deal with this. Are we going to heal from it? Move on and make sure |
1:22.4 | it doesn't happen to us again, and that of course we never do this to anyone else or do we for what other unfathomable reason |
1:32.5 | pass this hurt on to the next generation to people in our lives now that we have power over |
1:40.3 | i know it sounds unconscionable how could we possibly hurt someone in the exact same way |
1:48.0 | we had been hurt, knowing the pain it caused us? And yet don't we all know people that have done |
1:56.3 | this? And the truth of it is, the person or or persons that hurt us, almost always, were hurt themselves. |
2:06.1 | This is what I'd like to explore together today, breaking the cycle of hurt by creating an alchemy of healing. |
2:13.9 | Let's begin my understanding what I mean by hurt. |
2:16.9 | There are, of course, different ways that people can hurt us. |
2:19.9 | Sometimes it's physical, sometimes it's emotional, sometimes it's relational. And though hurt is |
