As you guys will recall, the last time we checked in with William to Comstah Sherman and Joe Johnston,

the two-week-long standoff between the opposing armies at Kennesaw Mountain was over,

as the federal's maneuvering to the south, beyond the

rebel's left flank, forced Johnston's hand, and he issued orders for the rebel army to pull

out of its Kennesaw lines and fall back to a new position around Smyrna Station on the Western

and Atlantic Railroad.

Early on the morning of July 3rd, 1864, messages began flying back and forth between Sherman

and his generals, telling of the Confederate retreat. George Thomas notified Sherman shortly

before 3 a.m. that the rebels were no longer in front of his lines.

Sherman ordered Black Jack Logan's 15th Corps to press up Little Kennesaw to see if the rebel lines there were vacant as well, which they were.

By mid-morning, Sherman had notified Henry Halleck in Washington that the Confederates
