Summary

Our own bodies are a source of infinite learning and mystery. Most of us are familiar with our skin, our hair, muscles, and teeth; but did you know that you have an internal latticework of connective tissues called fascia, that give shape and structure to what would otherwise be a bloody ball of soft serve? Unlike many tissues in the body with a distinct beginning and end, fascial sheaths are often long, complex, and can span the entire length of the body. Even more interesting, fascia is loaded with sensors and nerve endings. It is smart tissue that can serve us well or cause pain, discomfort and injury. On this week’s podcast, we’ll explore this fascinating tissue from a health and healing perspective.

Listen and learn:

  • How fascial adhesion and contraction can result from stress
  • How your abdominal fascia is linked to fascia in your quadriceps
  • Passive versus active therapies
  • The importance of organized scar tissue while healing

One of the things I find so fascinating is that we don't, most of us, we don't even know

0:12.4

that much about our own bodies.

0:14.5

When you think about your body right now, most of us are very familiar with our skin,

0:19.4

perhaps your teeth and your hair, you have a working idea about muscles.

0:23.6

But there's a whole lattice work of connective tissue inside you called fascia.

0:27.9

There are dozens of different types of fascia.

0:31.1

Some of this connective tissue lattice work is so distinct from other tissues that can

0:35.8

literally be pulled apart.

0:38.6

Other types of fascia go in, out, around and through muscles to the point where you might

0:43.8

even refer to them as myofascial units, muscles and fascia together.

0:49.1

This is relevant because fascia is different than other connective tissues like tendons

0:53.9

and ligaments and cartilage.

0:55.4

It's very smart tissue.

0:58.2

It has lots of nerve endings.

1:00.0

It has a lot of mechanosensors.

1:02.4

It communicates directly to your nervous system.

1:05.6

It's really intelligent.

1:06.6

It helps you understand where your body is in space.

1:10.1

And it also helps you feel things inside, both proprioception and interoception.

1:15.8

Those are all the good things.

1:16.8

On the bad side, it can be a source or even a cause of pain and dysfunction in your body.
