The most notable thing on my list here is the anime movie from 1986. It's called Super Mario Brothers, the great mission to rescue princess Peach. Now, I feel like some version of this had been

floating around on the internet for a decade. For the longest time, it was sort of a, did you know style, fact like, oh, they made this anime movie and nobody seen it. And here's like a poster or whatever. And then like bad versions floated online. But then these folks at this, this company or this, this fan

collective called Kineco video, they were able to get a 16 millimeter print. Maybe the only one ever in circulation at this point and do a full 4K restoration. So if you go on YouTube and you type this, this movie title in your in your search engine, you can pull up a full 4K copy with subtitles and watch it. I did for the very first time for this podcast. It's an hour long, but it's a, it's a very long hour.

Folks, I'll say that an hour long and a long hour. Yeah. Now I, I never thought it would be available like this. Like it was always a did you know fact or like the actual first Mario movie came out years before this or whatever. Like and I always would have wanted to have watched it. But it was not regularly available. And I didn't want to watch like a very crappy like copy of a copy of a copy of a VHS of it.

I met and this 4K thing like this looks better than a lot of like a blue raise you can buy on the shelf now of classic anime like it's it's amazing to look at as far as a piece of

animation history preserved. Now, Drew, did you check this out by any chance?

Yeah. So back in my old general, the blog I used to keep was back of the cereal box. I did a three part series on this using the cruddy full length movie that was posted on YouTube back in the day with I think Korean subtitles stamped onto the bottom. You couldn't get rid of.

And just trying to dive into it because I didn't know what existed for a long time and then didn't know is on YouTube. And I kind of love it in that it is this like like secret history of Mario.

And watching people work with like the mythos of Mario back before there was all that much to work with and having to invent a lot of it in order to like pat out a script. I thought it was super interesting. And then this new restored version is just gorgeous to look at. So I was very excited to rewatch it, which I did in total.

Yeah, I checked it out for the first time yesterday, watched it in full. And I was really grating on a curve because honestly they did the best they could. This movie came out a month after the second Super Mario game in Japan. We know it here is lost levels blah blah blah.

Don't you don't keep panic we understand.

But yeah, it was made to promote that game. I'm sure. And yes, you're right. True. They had very little go on just looking at what was available for these movie creators.

Essentially looking at what they did and what was available looks like they had the game in the box art. And that is why Luigi is wearing blue overalls and a yellow shirt because I was looking at the box art.

Oh, Luigi is not there. And then in the game, he has white overalls. So they probably thought like, oh, white's not going to be a great color for this character. Let's just go with yellow or something like that. So at this point in time, Luigi being in green had not been codified. Yes.

The original Mario Brothers game kind of codified that. But this was a new series for them. It's super Mario brothers. Right.

Similarly, I think that's the reason that tow the mushroom retainers show up as like ladies and waiting because I think they maybe they had that official box art for the original Super Mario Brothers. We can see tow looking like toad.
