where David becomes king. Sort of. It goes like this. In the course of time, David inquired of the

Lord, shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah, he asked. The Lord said, go up. David asked,

where shall I go? Tehebrun, the Lord answered. So David went up there with his two wives,

Ahanoam of Jesrael and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. David also took the men who were with

him, each with his family, and they settled in Hebron and its towns. Then the men of Judah

came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the tribe of Judah. When David was told that it was the men from Gabesh

Gilead who had buried Saul, he said, messengers to say to them, the Lord bless you for showing this

kindness to Saul your master by burying him. May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness,

and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this.

Now then, be strong and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have

anointed me king over them.

So David becomes king, but he only becomes king of his tribe, of the tribe of Judah.

Now, this is the first time we've had a king over just Judah. Up until this point,

kings have been kings of Israel. Well, I say kings. Saul has been the king of Israel, and there's

been nobody else who's been king before him. So we've only had one king, and he was king over

the whole mess of all 12 tribes. And so this is different. Now, what's going on with the rest of the country? We learn that when we read on.

We're between the houses of David and Saul. Meanwhile, Abner, the son of Nair, the commander of Saul's army,

had taken Ish Basheth, son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim. He was made king over Gilead, Asherai,
