Summary

Most people think the market is too crowded to stand out, but Sam Vander Wielen proves otherwise. After leaving a legal career she hated, Sam faced enormous personal and professional challenges, yet built an eight-figure business selling legal templates online. Her secret? Embracing authenticity—sharing her real story, letting her brand reflect her true self, and doing the unglamorous work of listening deeply to her customers. In this episode, Sam reveals how 1,200 sales calls became the foundation for her flagship product, and why building a loyal email audience matters more than chasing social media likes. She shares how to collect meaningful feedback, spot patterns, and deliver what your audience wants, while still giving them what they truly need. Challenge of the Week: Start a “sizzle file:” a note on your phone or a document where you collect every question, comment, or bit of feedback you get from clients, friends, or anyone who asks about your business or expertise. Don’t overthink it—just start dropping them in and look for the patterns. If you have time, go back over your texts, emails, and DMs from the past week and add any other relevant questions. *** To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: the1thing.com/pods. This week, our guest is Sam Vanderweelen. I met Sam at a conference I attended last month,

0:05.5

and it was the first time I'd ever heard her speak, the first time I'd heard about her business or

0:09.0

her book. And she absolutely blew me away. She comes from a very real place. She's super authentic,

0:14.5

and you can just tell, like, man, this person really knows what she's talking about. Sam was an

0:19.1

attorney who hated her career, thought that's

0:21.3

where she wanted to go. She dealt with multiple challenges while pivoting from being an attorney

0:26.5

to starting her own online business selling legal templates. But in eight short years,

0:31.4

despite the fact she lost both of her parents, had to take care of her father in his dying

0:35.2

years, also had brain surgery herself,

0:38.1

all of these challenges. In eight short years, she built an eight-figure business,

0:42.0

and we get a chance to learn from her today. We only have a 30 or so minutes,

0:46.0

so we are focused on some of the things that I love about what she's done.

0:49.8

She did over 1,200 interviews to figure out exactly what it was customers needed so that she

0:56.8

could deliver the right product.

0:58.4

Those were also sales calls, by the way.

1:00.1

She didn't take that long to figure it out, but she made a real commitment to understand

1:04.9

what is it that she could uniquely do, that they uniquely needed, and through curiosity,

1:10.2

delivered an eight-figure product.

1:11.9

She's a great business person, lots of tactical tips, and I also think she's just pretty

1:15.7

darn funny. I hope you'll enjoy this episode with Sam Vanderweelen.
