Summary

Gillian Ross has always found it difficult to put a label on her spiritual perspective. If pressed she would describe herself as a Christian Buddhist yogi and mystic with a penchant for Taoism! Over recent years, however, she has been happy to call herself a spiritual evolutionary or evolutionary mystic in the tradition of Teilhard de Chardin in the West and Sri Aurobindo in the East. Born in the UK in 1940, she migrated to Australia as an academic in the early sixties. Her Western education gave her an Honours Science Degree, a Masters degree in Philosophy and a Doctorate in the Behavioural Sciences but left her feeling increasingly restless and unfulfilled. There was a growing awareness that her intellectual conditioning had disconnected her from the natural spontaneity and mystical riches of her childhood. The deep love she felt for her children awakened lost memories of spiritual connection. She began to meditate, practice yoga and study Eastern philosophies. In her early forties, she left her marriage, her city life, and academic career and took her family of two young sons, two dogs and two cats off to the Blue Mountains of NSW to explore an alternative lifestyle. She has never looked back! After many years of feeling like a fish out of water, she came to understand what it means to “flow in the current of the Eternal Tao”. She trained as a yoga teacher and shiatsu therapist and has become a best selling ABC author (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) of relaxation and meditation CDs and a yoga video as well as publishing four books on science and mysticism and the evolution of consciousness. After her sons left home she moved even further into the wild. Over the last 20 years, she has fallen in love with 40 acres of natural bush adjacent to a powerful sacred aboriginal site in Northern NSW. She nurtures it as a haven for spiritual retreats and residential weekends on evolutionary spirituality and mystic meditation, delighting in sharing with others some of the philosophies and practices that have helped to bring her out of spiritual bleakness into a lasting sense of peace, purpose and, above all, joy. 1:14.4	Australia, which is not too far from Sydney, I guess. And I just finished reading her book,
1:21.4	Consciousness versus Catastrophe, or almost have finished some little bits I haven't read yet.
1:28.1	I would say that if I had the talent and the time to write a book,
1:31.8	I would want to write a book like this because it's beautifully written
1:35.1	and it really encapsulates everything my whole view of the way things work.
1:41.0	So I think Julian and I are going to have an interesting conversation
1:43.6	because we're really on the same page as far as the universe and spirituality and all such
1:49.1	subjects. We could probably talk for many, many hours, but we'll try to limit it to about two.
1:56.7	One thing I just wanted to say is, you know, this week, for those of you who are watching this, maybe years later, there's been in the news the story of the Amazon rainforest burning at an unprecedented rate.
2:10.2	And there's something about that event that kind of strikes me as being similar but in a negative way to the Earthrise photo that William Anders took on the Apollo 8 mission to the moon.
2:23.1	It seems to me that it's kind of shaking people up in a way that that moonshot photo inspired people globally.
2:31.8	We sort of feel that the crisis that we're in is reaching a tipping point.
2:38.6	Coincidentally, maybe not coincidentally, there's all these stories in the news about how
2:43.1	teenagers are destroying their lungs with vaping. And I saw there's some connection there
2:47.4	between the people destroying their lungs and the lungs of the earth being
