Welcome to the Bible study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We are skipping over for Samuel 12. I told you we would last week. I am true to my word. It is not so much about the Kings as it is about Samuel, which is only fair because this is one of two books in the Bible with his name, but different from what we're focusing on right now. And it is Samuel's

farewell speech. Farewell, not because he's dying. That's going to happen later on,

but because he is kind of handing over the reins there in 1st Samuel 12 to Saul. So Saul serves

for a long time. We're going to see that here in 1 Samuel 13 for 42 years.

And we catch him when he's 30 years old when he becomes king.

And then we pick up the story sometime later when he himself has a son who is probably around that age.

So we've skipped a lot here.

And we've skipped, unfortunately, the good years.

And so we're about to get into Saul getting into trouble.

Saul was 30 years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel 42 years.

Saul chose 300 men from Israel.

country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gebeah and Benjamin, the rest of the men he sent

back to their homes. Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it.

Then Saul had the trumpet blown throughout the

land and said, Let the Hebrews hear, so all Israel heard the news. Saul has attacked the Philistine

outpost, and now Israel has become obnoxious to the Philistines, and the people were summoned

to join Saul at Gilgall. The Philistines assembled to fight Israel with 3,000 chariots, 6,000 charioteers, and soldiers
