And today we are talking on free-for-all Friday about Mondigreens.

You see, Monday through Thursday on the podcast, we talk apologetics, theology, how to explain

and defend the Catholic faith.

On Friday's we talk about whatever I want to talk about, whatever weird or interesting

topic comes up.

And I want to talk about Mondigreens.

You might not know what they are, but when I explain to you what they are, a few of them

are bound to pop into your head.

This is what it says.

A Mondigreen is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase in a way that gives it a new

meaning.

Mondigreens are often created by a person listening to a poem or a song, the listener being

unable to clearly hear a lyric, substitutes words that sound similar, making some kind

of sense.

The term goes back to the author Sylvia Wright in 1954.

She said that as a girl, she would listen to a Scottish ballad called the Bonnie Earl

of Murray.

And there was a line in there, laid him on the green.

And she always thought they were saying, lady Mondigreen.
