Jamie explains that one of the interested parties was longtime NASCAR Truck team owner Mike Mittler, and after pairing up with him in 1999 he began a meteoric rise up the NASCAR ladder. Jamie speaks about the pressure he felt when he was called up to the Cup Series by Ganassi Racing to fill in for an injured Sterling Marlin in 2002. It was during this stint that Jamie made history by winning his first Cup event in just his second attempt, at the UAM-GM Quality 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, an upset victory that shocked the sport. Dale and Jamie compare notes on transitioning from race driver to commentator and what fulfillment they find in the broadcast booth. They also reflect on their time as full-time drivers and how stepping away from the grind can give a new perspective on the sport.
