Hey everybody welcome back to cold case murder mysteries. I'm your host Ryan Kraus

returning for a look at one of the more intriguing wrongful

conviction cases in recent memory, the Central Park 5. On the night of April 19th

1989, a group of more than 30 local teens gathered on the north side of Manhattan Central Park

and proceeded to rove the pathways of the area as a mob intent upon causing chaos ranging from innocent taunts on passers-by to brutally violent assaults.

Like most gatherings of this sort, some kids are just there for the spectacle or to be part of something.

They're bored or seeking identity as part of a group, the same way someone might do with

a sports team, or even a gang. There's a certain sense of empowerment in groups of

belonging, community. But what it also brings on the opposite end of that spectrum for

those who choose to abuse that power is entitlement.

The influential are often corrupted by the entitlement offered by that power.

And the same thing goes for those lacking power once they get it.

Unfortunately, we understand power can lead to lack of empathy.

And so it was, on this night, the formation of this mob, so to speak,

empowered certain individuals in a manner that rendered vicious crimes.

Numerous people in that section of Central Park that otherwise assaulted, though the expansive size of the park and dense population of the area

make it difficult to tie all of these crimes to the nearly three dozen teens in question. Sadly, that won't stop the DA's office from trying, and the reason

is that one of these crimes became wildly sensational in the aftermath.

Among the assaults that night, we learned 28-year-old Tricia Myley was savagely attacked while jogging

in the park, having been raped, beaten, and bloodied to a point she had no recollection of the incident or even her attacker's identity.

After losing nearly 75 to 80 percent of her blood, she was finally discovered in a wooded area

where it became apparent she'd been dragged off the trail into darkness for the attack.
