Summary

5 Words to Keep in Your Vocabulary (even when you’re faced with unknowns) 1 - Rest The act of ceasing to work in order to be refreshed and recover your strength (even when you don’t think you’re worthy of it) 2 - Play To engage in an activity just for the fun of it (even when there’s no definitive factor of why it’s important or how it’s productive) 3 - Curiosity A stirring desire to look around right where you are to learn something new (even when there are unknowns ahead of you) 4 - Dream A cherished thought of something you would like to happen (that even when it seems too childish or impractical, you can still recognize the act of dreaming itself as something that keeps hope stirring within you). 5 - Grace Grace is unmerited favor giving you permission to see who you are beyond what you do. Grace is the sun that rises yet another day (even as you wait for other things to fall in place).

Well, hello there. It's Morgan Harper-Nichols here. I'm an artist and a writer, and this is a space

0:06.1

where I turn the lens on various topics and subjects in hopes to learn something new or see something in a new way.

Today's episode is called Five Words to Keep in Your Vocabulary, even when you're facing unknowns.

0:22.5

Thank you for listening.

The five words that I'm going to be sharing with you today are words that I have shared on social media. And these are all words that you already know, and I've written a short poem

0:36.3

as a definition for each word in hopes to perhaps

0:40.9

see this word in a new way and perhaps create a reason to keep this word in your vocabulary

0:48.3

even when you're facing unknowns. I know for me when it comes to waiting, seasons of questioning,

0:57.9

it can be very hard and oftentimes feel limiting in terms of how I think about things or how

1:04.4

I think about the future. This is why I think words on their own are so powerful. So I would just like to invite you to listen to this

1:14.1

word and listen to my poetic definition, but also come up with your own definition of what this

1:20.6

word means to you. And of course, I will put all of these poetic definitions in the show notes

1:26.9

if you would like to refer to them later.

1:29.7

So the first word to keep in your vocabulary is rest, rest, the act of ceasing to work

1:38.6

in order to be refreshed and recover your strength, even when you don't think you're worthy of it. I added that

1:49.6

second part, even when you don't think you're worthy of it, because I think that oftentimes,

1:55.7

intellectually, we know that we need rest. However, intellectually, we know that we have things to do. We know that

2:03.7

there is a to-do list that still has unmarked checks. There are still people who need things from

2:11.3

us, people relying on us. And as a result, it can feel close to impossible sometimes to feel like we are worthy of rest.

2:21.1

So just keep that in your mind as you are facing any unknown.

2:26.8

It's okay.

2:28.3

It's still okay to take that time to rest.
