Summary

This week, the hacks throw on their strategists’ caps and discuss how they would manage the leading campaigns in the wake of the first debates. Axe and Murphy also break down the slew of post-debate polling, talk Trump’s trip to North Korea, and discuss whether there’s a lane for a more moderate candidate should Biden’s support continues to slip. Guest hack Julián Castro, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Democratic presidential candidate, joins the show to talk about his standout debate performance, his immigration plan, and what’s next for the campaign. Lastly, the hacks reach into the mailbag and answer listener questions about a Murphy's post-debate advice for Warren, Axe’s take on former Obama staffers working the race, and what Amy Klobuchar needs to do to break through. So, Murphy, we haven't spoken since the early morning hours of Friday in the blush

0:27.9

of the debate, but now, you know, it's always true that you have to wait and see how things settle

0:33.9

in a few days before you can really assess what happened. What happened doesn't differ that much

from what we saw, but now we see some numbers on it. There are three different polls that show Joe Biden

0:51.9

with like a ten-point drop in support since that debate and a significant boost for Kamala Harris.

So, you're sitting in the war rooms of these two campaigns and we'll get to the others in a minute.

1:03.9

What are you thinking? Let's start with Biden because it looks to me like this is significant problems here.

1:11.9

Yeah, that's the big problem here. Yeah, I would be, first of all, I'd be thinking how much whiskey do we have in the hotel?

1:17.9

We might need all of it because I think in the Biden campaign has been sending a tell here.

1:23.9

Of course, Kamala did very well in the debate, but she also won the media echo chamber afterwards.

1:29.9

So now that moves the noise meter this early polling. It really shows you how untethered everything is.

1:35.9

So, if I were in the Biden world, I'd be kind of, I'd know that was coming. Bad debates get worse in the coverage afterward

1:41.9

because everything you did that was good is forgotten. And I'd be thinking about all right, we got to make a call here.

1:46.9

Can Joe get a lot better? And the tell I'm seeing is they don't think he can.

1:52.9

So, I would try Plan B, the only thing I got left. And I may be wrong about Joe getting better. I'd try anyway, but they don't seem to be doing that.

2:00.9

So, I would pivot big to foreign affairs where I'm supposed to be the world master. Trump's given me a big opportunity with North Korea.

2:06.9

I would jump on it and pick a fight on my issue and try to change the channel.

2:12.9

We should, let me cue up a little bit of an exchange that Donald Trump had with his new best friend Kim Jong-un in North Korea the other day.

2:24.9

And then let's get back to the point you just made.

2:28.9

And we got to meet and stepping across that line was a great honor. A lot of progress has been made.

2:35.9

A lot of friendships have been made. And this has been in particular a great friendship. So, I just want to thank you. That was very quick notice that I want to thank you.
