Hello and welcome to episode five of the Battleground podcast. I'm Saul David and this week Patrick Bishop and I consider the point of no return in the Falklands War. Mid-May 1982 when the

1:22.2

amphibious landing force set sail from sunny Ascension Island and heads for the dark and stormy waters of the South Atlantic.

1:30.3

The landing, though most of those on board don't know it, is only nine days away.

2:20.5

in the dark days of June 1940, as Winston Churchill looked for ways to strike back against a seemingly

2:26.6

unstoppable Nazi Germany. It's a story I should mention that I'm currently writing about in my new book

2:33.0

Red Devils. But let's get

2:35.1

back to 1982. Patrick, you were on Canberra with three commander brigade as it headed down to the

2:41.4

South Atlantic from Ascension. Tell us something about the atmosphere on board. Well, the overwhelming

2:46.6

feeling you got was one of great confidence. Everyone was bristling with purpose. They're also
