Hello from CNN, I'm Afoma Dikke with the five things you need to know for Friday, December 22nd.

It took many days and many, many long nights of negotiating to get this right. But today this council provided a

glimmer of hope amongst a sea of unimaginable suffering. That's US AmbassadorS. Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas Greenfield,

after the UN Security Council passed a proposal,

calling for pauses and fighting between Hamas and Israel and Gaza,

so critical aid can get in.

However, the U.S. ultimately abstained,

along with Russia.

Thomas Greenfield said the U.S. didn't vote for the measure

because it didn't condemn Hamas or the October 7th attack, but welcomed that the resolution would call

for the appointment of a senior UN official to expedite and facilitate aid

deliveries. Israel's foreign minister says the measure will make sure aid doesn't go to Hamas and

says the war will continue until the remaining hostages are released and Hamas is

eliminated. Today Israel indicated that it's widening its military operation in

Gaza. It called for people in Central Gaza to move

to shelters for safety, signaling a shift in its ground offensive. The Supreme Court has

rejected Special Counsel Jacksmith's request for the justices to fast track arguments on a dispute about Donald Trump's immunity without giving a reason.
