Hello from CNN, I'm a Foma D.K. With the five things you need to know for Monday, October 2nd.

It's the first day of a historic civil trial against former President Donald Trump,

his adult sons, their businesses, and Trump organization executives.

Before the trial began, New York Attorney General Letitia James

gave remarks outside the courthouse.

Donald Trump and the other defendants have committed persistent and repeated fraud.

Last week, the judge found the defendants liable for repeated fraud for grossly inflating

assets on financial statements and will decide on six other claims.

He'll also consider how much the trumps and their businesses will have to pay.

During opening statements, an attorney from the AG's office urged the judge to bar Trump

from doing business in New York. The state is also

seeking $250 million in damages and to stop the company from engaging in business transactions

for five years. Trump says the case is politically motivated and

criticized the AG and the judge. He's a Democrat club politician. He's a Democrat

operative and he's a disgrace to people to call themselves judges.

And I hope my lawyers go in and I hope they fight him very hard because this guy's getting away with murder.

The Supreme Court has declined to take up two cases in the first day of its new term.
