Hello from CNN, I'm Anna Sturla with the five things you need to know for Wednesday January 3rd.

At least 103 people were killed and almost 200 people injured in two explosions that rocked Iran today.

That's according to Iranian state media.

The twin blasts happened near the burial site of military commander

Kasim Soleimani and came on the fourth anniversary of his death in a US

air strike.

Iranian officials called the explosions a terror attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for the explosions, at least one of which was caused by a bomb,

according to State TV. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller

addressed rumors about who might be behind the attack. It's too early, at least for us to be able to say what might have

caused it but I do want to address some of the irresponsible claims that I have seen

circulate and say that number one the United States was not involved in any way and any

suggestion to the contrary is ridiculous and number two we have no reason to

believe that Israel was involved in this explosion.

The explosions could heighten tensions in the region,

which have already spiked since the start of the Israel-Hamass war.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says there's been some progress in negotiations over US Southern border policy.

But Senate sources tell CNN there are still major hurdles to get a deal done on immigration law changes in exchange for aid to Israel and Ukraine.

For weeks, three senators from different parties have been trying to find an agreement on policy

aimed at stopping the surge of illegal crossings at the U.S. Mexico border, which have hit record highs in the past month.

But it's unclear whether they can accomplish a deal at all, much less one that can pass the Senate and House,

or a source tells CNN Republicans are focused on moving forward, with steps
