Summary

For years now, I've made it a priority to tell the people that I care about I appreciate them. "I appreciate you." In today's episode of 5-MINUTE FRIDAY, I'm chatting about "friend dating" and how this phrase feels particularly important right now. I'm also chatting about the importance of vulnerability when it comes to establishing solid, deep relationships, and how I'm willing to get uncomfortable when it comes to making some new connections.

PROMPT: Are you willing to show up and be seen when you can’t control the outcome? If not, what’s stopping you?

I am talking about appreciation.

You know, I went to summer camp for 15 years of my life. I feel like such a

1:07.7

nerd when I say that sometimes. I was there from ages 6 to 21, casually.

1:15.0

Of course, from 6 to 15 I was a camper and from 16 to 21 I was on staff as a counselor

1:21.0

and then a division head and then as a programming director.

1:25.2

And so at summer camp when you were on staff you always went a week early for orientation

1:30.4

and to get the camp ready and do all the logistical stuff.

1:34.0

And I remember that part of the orientation on the very first day,

1:38.0

we would always file into the mess hall and go through this helpful like pamphlet so to speak and in the

1:46.4

pamphlet it covered a lot of stuff literally everything from emergency

1:50.6

precautions to navigating tough situations with campers.

1:54.8

There was this list of phrases that were supposed to help counselors and superiors

1:59.2

communicate more clearly and effectively.

2:02.2

And I'll never forget in one of those orientations, it was in the summer of

2:05.8

2008 and we were going through this pamphlet and someone highlighted one of the phrases which was,

2:11.7

I appreciate you. And I remember at the time like we all laughed because this
