Summary

Life has been a lot lately. In between the work calls and running around, I've been having a lot of conversations with friends about worth — the importance of owning it and sticking up for yourself. For today's episode of 5-MINUTE FRIDAY, I'm talking about the importance of being your own advocate. When you do, you may just be pleasantly surprised the next time you’re going after what you want.

PROMPT: When was the last time you sold yourself short? Why do you think you do that? What can you change to better handle a similar situation the next time?

0:24.0

This week I am talking about owning your worth.

0:28.4

I won't lie, things have been really hectic for me lately and in the blur of what seems

0:34.6

to be my day to day, I seem to find myself having the same conversation over and over

0:42.2

with my friends and that conversation is surrounding value and worth.

0:48.2

So let me give a couple of examples of how this has come up in regular conversation.

0:53.2

The other day I was talking with a girlfriend who is changing jobs and when she was in the

1:00.0

contract negotiations phase of this job shift, she knew exactly how much money she wanted

1:07.8

to ask for, but she also knew the amount of money that she quote unquote should ask

1:13.0

for, the salary that would be expected for someone in this role.

1:19.5

What ended up happening was that she approached the company with the amount of money that

1:24.4

she wanted beyond what she quote unquote should be making and she was pleasantly surprised

1:32.2

when they met her the entire way and gave her that higher salary.

1:39.2

Another example, I was talking to another girlfriend who was seeing this guy that she thought

1:42.7

was great, but she constantly articulated that they had different love languages and

1:49.2

because of their different love languages, she felt like asking for the things that were

1:55.0

important to her was an inconvenience to her partner.

2:02.0

Long pause on purpose.

2:03.5

Basically, the conversation went like this with me and her.

2:06.2

I said to her, so is your partner making you feel like you have less value or you're

2:10.8

not entitled to the things that make you happy in a relationship?

2:14.0

She started to like try to defend him and I said, listen, I get that you care about this
